and more, will help you plan a successful visit to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania,
U.S.A.
The namesake for this town had never been a resident of either the area or
even the state of Pennsylvania. An American Indian athlete, Jim Thorpe won every
pentathalon event save the javelin in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, only to
later have his medals stripped for his involvement in professional baseball
prior to the games, a violation of Olympic competition. Today, a memorial to
Thorpe can be found in the town commemorating his life and athletic prowess.
Activities in Jim Thorpe range from whitewater rafting to cross country skiing,
and there are several accommodation types available for visitors to avail themselves
of. Fans of railroad history can see the Switchback Gravity Railroad in Jim
Thorpe, the first railroad in Pennsylvania and the second in the United States
as a whole.
